Artist Talk
“Painting became a form of self-discovery, the subconscious speaking through paint.”
Join Meli Axford for an honest and intimate artist talk exploring the journey behind her Pool Series, now in its seventh year.
Known for her vibrant figurative paintings that reimagine the Australian landscape through family, memory and the female gaze, Axford speaks candidly about building a creative practice later in life: from a working-class upbringing in regional Queensland and a career in technology, to becoming a nationally and internationally exhibited painter.
Part memoir, part creative reflection, the evening traces how meaning in her work often emerged long after the paintings were made — and where her practice sits within the broader cultural conversation about identity, visibility and the female voice. This talk will particularly resonate with late-blooming creatives, aspiring artists, and anyone who has ever felt the pull to make something meaningful but wondered if it was too late to begin.
